Notes on as-yet-to-be-named augmented chalk-talk...
I am excited to move forward with this project. Last week’s studio discussion was very affirming in that this “chalk-talk” type experience, augmented by dynamic media, could be an engaging platform for educational classroom discussion and interaction. There are, however, a lot of questions that still need answers, and options that need to be considered or filtered out. I went...

WatchWatch
It is coming together. Working towards a big goal, but definitely taking some decent size chunks out of it. Tonight was really fun. barelyconcealednuance: A first test of the full system: a high decible level detected by our mic turns on a relay which triggers the water pump.  We’re still working to figure out dynamic decible threshold detection and consistent flow. But extremely encouraging.

Vulnerable Interfaces
(Cross-posted from Studio Wiki) This week I have been wrestling with the question: how can my interface manifest the themes that are present in my database? I’ve been putting off thinking about it, I guess, until tonight. I watched one of the most compelling TED talks I’ve ever seen. It was about vulnerability. Brene Brown asserts that vulnerability isn’t just present in...

Joy, Playfulness, Gesture and Responsbility
There is something about the JOY and FUN, the LIFE, in Nikalus Troxler’s work that I want to incorporate into the work I make - the interfaces I design. I don’t want it to be so restrained. I want it to move in BOLD strokes. And what about Tibor Kalman? I am going back to my influences as a young print designer and and realizing that they are NOT irrelevant. What of these...

Art & Politics
fuckyeahwestwing: “You think that I think an artist’s job is to tell the truth?  An artist’s job is to captivate you for however long we’ve asked for your attention.  If we stumble onto truth we got lucky, and I don’t get to decide what truth is.” U.S. Poet Laureate Tabatha Fortis, s03e18

Reflecting on The Shape of Content
I have been thinking a lot about how distracted I am by, well, everything. It seems like a lot of people have been thinking about that same thing. We spent some time in class last week discussing how human attention and focus is changing, and we have talked a lot about all the research and hypothesizing that’s being done about it. I’ve also been listening to the audio book of The...

Remixing / Learning by Making
I was recently asked by the band Ellipsis to work on some remixes of their recent album, Walk This Road. It is a totally beautiful album, and is such an honor to be working with the elements from it. Remixing their work is also a really cool stylistic exploration, since Ellipsis is a contemporary folk trio, and the music I make resides pretty squarely in the hip-hop and dance/electronic music...

Bringing it into the Real
I have been sick as a dog for the last four days. It’s been totally miserable. In my stints of fever-laden daydreaming, I have thought of a few things. I have always had a bend towards, an inclination for, work that incorporates elements of social responsibility. Hell, I was a teacher at a rural, indigenous school in Ecuador for a while. I’m interested in helping people. But...

The 6 Degrees of Rick Rubin
Below is the rough draft of my “data” for the Girl Talk visualization project. I spent a lot of time on this “research,” but it was fun. The 6 Degrees of Rick Rubin as seen through Girl Talk - Feed the Animals - Track 7 - Like This (3:21)   James Gang - Funk #49 0:00 - 0:16 James Gang’s song “Ashes, the Rain, and I” sampled by David Guetta for a...
